Homeopathy is widespread and available in some countries and virtually unknown in other countries. India has the largest homeopathic infrastructure in the world, with an estimated 246,000 practitioners in 2010 and with the number of homeopathic hospitals and dispensaries increasing four-fold since 1980 (Indian Council of Medical Research 2010). It is also well established in some European countries where it is partly covered under the national health insurance such as the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland and some Latin American countries and it originally hails from Germany.
Homeopathy uses a highly individualised treatment approach and is unsuitable for randomised clinical research models often used in medical research (one treatment protocol for one condition). However, there is increasing research available and the research evidence base is growing.
