World Wellness Group’s AOD Prevention Program works with multicultural communities to build social connection and belonging as a way to prevent alcohol and other drug harm.
World Wellness Group’s Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Prevention Program works with multicultural communities to strengthen social connection and belonging as a way to prevent harm from alcohol and other drugs. While there’s lots of evidence that social belonging prevents AOD harms, there’s very little evidence how this applies to multicultural communities. Our program seeks to gather this evidence.
Many people from migrant and refugee backgrounds face added stresses such as settling into a new country, trauma, language barriers and feeling excluded. These experiences can increase the risk of harm but most social belonging programs are not designed with multicultural communities in mind. They tend to focus on place-based initiatives while our program will be focusing on culture-based initiatives. We will be putting culture, lived experience and community leadership at the centre.
Disconnection from community increases vulnerability and can be driven by stigma..
Maintaining cultural ties strengthens resilience and wellbeing.
Belonging is one of the strongest protective factors against harm.
Funded by the Queensland Mental Health Commission, the program runs from April 2026 to June 2027 and partners with Filipino, Vietnamese and Punjabi (Sikh) communities. Communities decide what wellbeing and belonging mean for them and design their own prevention activities with support from World Wellness Group.

The program is independently evaluated by the University of Queensland, helping build much‑needed evidence about what works in multicultural AOD prevention and informing future policy and practice.
Our Multicultural Peer Support Workers play a key role throughout the program. They support communities to plan and deliver culturally relevant activities such as community conversations, family or youth events, leadership workshops and creative projects. Each community receives a small grant to bring their ideas to life.
