Our Health Justice Program provides legal advocacy to vulnerable people who have legal problems impacting negatively on their mental and physical health. In 2018-19 our unfunded work totaled $409,000 and over half was in the Health Justice Program.
Many immigrants, refugees and people seeking asylum have complex legal problems which further compound their social disadvantage such as complicated and protracted visa determination processes, family and domestic violence related legal processes, employment related issues including exploitation, under-payment and injury, fines and licencing issues, victims of crime and navigating the criminal justice system. WWG was one of 22 projects who pitched for support through
the 2019 QUT Giving Day. We reached our
tipping point target of $10k in 30 hours in order to convert it to $15k! The
funds were channelled towards our unfunded and pro bono work.
Our inaugural comic relief show Laughter is the Best Medicine raised $36K in one afternoon through a sell-out show, raffles, donations and best of all, a fantastic show with some of Australia’s best comic talent. The funds went to support our unfunded work with people seeking asylum, particularly those who are Medicare ineligible.
The inequities in the health system that lock people out had an enormous impact on WWG in 2017. We launched our Don’t Stand By Campaign to raise $25K in one month by shining the light on the facts of health inequity and passed our target by raising $28K.
WWG uses a social impact framework to measure outputs and outcomes to improve health and wellbeing and health equity for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
